US Department Freeze Coronavirus Website Suspected To Be Scammer
The US Department of Justice and Homeland Security confiscated coronaprevention.org website when its owner tried to sell it in exchange for Bitcoin.
According to the reports, the site owner was about to sell the website domain to an undercover agent with the Department of Homeland Security's Criminal Investigations Unit and confessed that they were going to use the site to sell fake COVID-19 testing kits.
As per the warrant, the owner of the site coronaprevention.org listed the domain for sale on the forum related to one who was interested in hacking and hijacking online accounts. The incident took place just after the day when the US President declared a national emergency due to COVID-19.
The undercover agent reached out to the owner of the site who charged him $500 in bitcoin for the domain. However, domain names of such types are cheaper to $20. Initially, the agent sent the partial amount to an undisclosed bitcoin address. The Department of Justice made an announcement that they had disrupted hundreds of domains that were being used to shill scams related to the coronavirus pandemic. But the list of domain names that were confiscated is not available.
The spokesperson of DOJ stated, “The department is aware of the reported increase in COVID-19-related fraud involving various virtual payment platforms and appreciates the proactive assistance of many in the cryptocurrency community to thwart those schemes.”
