Travelex Paid $3.2 Million In BTC To Ransomware Hackers

Travelex, the world’s largest foreign exchange has faced ransomware attacks where they paid $2.3 million in bitcoin in order to reclaim access to their network.

The Wall Street Journal reports that cybersecurity professionals advised the company to pay 285 BTC to hackers if they want to regain their access to the systems. The report reveals that the Travelex was in contact with regulators and partners during the course of the ransom and also stated that the original attack took place on New Year’s Eve.

However, Travelex has not revealed the amount of ransom paid but the WSJ report states that around $2.3 million was paid to get back access to the computer system. Travelex initially blamed the attack on the malware Sodinokibi, where the stolen data is published if the company refuses to pay the ransom.

Travelex, known for the world’s largest chain of foreign exchange offices and kiosks, has been facing challenges in its business since January. The ransomware attack leads to closure of the company’s website, application and internal network. As a result, the ransomware attack interrupted the cash deliveries to major UK banks.

London’s metropolitan police are working on the investigation regarding the source of the ransomware attack and reveal the identities of the hackers behind it.
