Millions Of Russian Car Owners Data Sold For Bitcoin
Anonymous hackers have exposed the data of 129 million Russian car owners to darknet in exchange for Bitcoin.
The leading cryptocurrency Bitcoin is again used by hackers for illegal activity. The unidentified hackers have exposed the data of 129 million Russian car owners on the darknet for just 0.3 BTC.
The RBC agency states, the information that is leaked include data of car owners such as full names, addresses, passport numbers, and other data belonging to millions of Russian car drivers.
As per the sources, the data was stolen and leaked from the registry of Russia’s patrol jurisdiction, the General Administration for Traffic Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. The shared data is authentic as claimed by an employee of a local car-sharing company.
RBC claims that data is being leaked for cryptocurrency as it was reported by the local publication Vedomosti. The cost of a full version of the database is 0.3 BTC that amounts to $2,900. The report further points, hackers are offered to buy some “exclusive” data for 1.5 BTC ($14,400).
The use of cryptocurrencies for illegal activities on the darknet market has been increased. As per the Chainalysis, the volume of illicit crypto activities in darknet has been doubled in 2019.
The hackers sell off the stolen data on the darknet for minimal price or even for free. In mid of April 2020, these hackers were selling the data of over 500,000 accounts of popular video conferencing platform Zoom for less than a penny each.
