Funding ISIS With Bitcoin Landed Woman In 13 Year Jail Imprisonment
A U.S. citizen has been sentenced to 13 years in jail by the Federal court of the United States. The woman was charged for laundering money for ISIS using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
According to the Department of Justice, Zoobia Shahnaz from Long Island has been condemned for 13 years jail as she was funding the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham via cryptocurrency payments. The report states that the number of funds was around $150,000 and she also tried to move to Syria to become a member of ISIS.
Following the indictment, Shahnaz defrauded banks such as American Express, Chase and Discover to raise the funds.
The court claim that Shahnaz used to take loans and credit cards under the false claims and through which she used to buy cryptocurrencies. These cryptocurrencies were taken from Pakistan, China, and Turkey and eventually to ISIS.
Previously reported, in July of 2017, Shahnaz was on her way to Syria where officials not let her board the flight at JFK Airport in New York City and then she was arrested later in the year.
She pleaded guilty to the charge in November 2018. However, Shahnaz’s legal counsel showed her social work for volunteering with Syrian refugees via the Syrian American Medical Society. Due to her social work, only 13 years of bars have been given rather than 110 years.
