Crypto Users! Stay Away From Fake Coronavirus Tracking Apps
Hackers have taken the coronavirus panic as an opportunity to carry out their illegal activities. Hackers are spreading fake coronavirus tracking applications to ransom users in crypto.
The Next Web report states that hackers are circulating fake coronavirus tracking applications for Android devices and users are being fooled into downloading malware.
The DomainTools researchers reported an uptrend in domain name registrations associated with coronavirus, and that leads to a specific website encouraging users to download the coronavirus tracking application. After installing the applications users download the “CovidLock” ransomware that changes the password of the lock screen of their device. If they want to regain access to their smartphone, users have to pay $100 in bitcoin.
Application has fake reviews and the website even proclaims to have certifications from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
DomainTool stated, the hacker group is associated with many scammers involved in other Android malware strikes. The researchers warn users not to download the applications outside of the official Android appstore.
