Browser Based Cryptojacking Has Returned And Spike To 163 Percent

As per the research conducted by cybersecurity firm Symantec the crypto prices have gone up with the help of cryptojacking attacks.

In the second quarter of 2020, there has been a 163% increased in browser-based cryptojacking activity. Back in March 2019, there was a decline of cryptojacking due to the shutdown of the mining script maker, CoinHive.

Symantec highlights that the increase in cryptojacking occurs at the same time when there was an increase in the value of Bitcoin and Monero, two cryptocurrencies often mined by miners that rely on browser-based cryptojacking malware.

Cryptojacking was prevailing high from September 2017 to March 2019 which became the major form of cyber-attacks at that time. However, in March 2019, the CoinHive project reportedly became economically inviable and according to sources, the mining stopped its operations on March 8, 2019.

Josh Lemos, VP of research and intelligence at BlackBerry, told Cointelegraogh in an interview that, hat crypto miners don’t need to be sophisticated and can be delivered in various ways:

"From JavaScript running on a website as a watering hole attack or embedded in a spear-phishing email to supply chain attacks with miners embedded in docker hub images and malicious browser extensions.”

A recent report published by ZDNet tells that the current increase in attacks was unlikely to be sustained.

“Most cybercrime groups who experimented with cryptojacking operations in the past usually dropped it weeks later, as they also discovered that browser-based cryptocurrency-mining was both a waste of their time and too noisy, drawing more attention to their respective operations than profits.”
