XRP Ledger Surpasses 12 Million x402 Payments as AI Agents Drive Digital Service Purchases
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is on the verge of reaching 12 million x402 payments, fueled by the increasing use of AI agents in purchasing online services such as computing and data. This significant milestone highlights the expanding influence of blockchain technology in the realm of automated commerce.
According to RippleX's head of engineering, J. Ayo Akinyele, the number of x402 payments skyrocketed from 1 million to nearly 12 million in just a few months. As of October 3, the XRPL recorded 11,965,947 x402 transactions, with a daily average of 525,618 payments over the past week.
The x402 payment protocol allows software to automatically pay for online resources, a process initiated when a service provider requests payment prior to delivering the requested information or computing capacity. This innovative approach is transforming how digital transactions are conducted.
Ripple's AI payment tools enable developers to connect autonomous software to wallets, facilitating seamless transactions. AI agents can now manage tasks like purchasing resources within an automated workflow, utilizing either XRP or Ripple USD (RLUSD) for payments.
Akinyele noted that the majority of recent transactions are linked to data purchases and AI inference, indicating a growing market for these digital services. The XRPL's rapid transaction speeds and predictable costs are key features that support this automated commerce landscape.
As the ecosystem evolves, the potential for broader commerce involving AI agents is becoming apparent, with discussions around user-defined spending limits and credit options for software buyers gaining traction.
