UAE Enhances Digital Identity System with Avalanche Blockchain for 12.5 Million Users
The United Arab Emirates is taking a significant step in digital governance by upgrading its UAEPASS digital vault to leverage Avalanche's decentralized blockchain technology. This move aims to enhance scalability and performance for over 12.5 million users, ensuring a robust digital identity ecosystem.
The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has chosen Avalanche, a smart contract-enabled Layer 1 blockchain, to manage the issuance and verification of documents from both government and private sectors. This upgrade will allow the UAEPASS platform to operate exclusively on UAE traffic, ensuring reliable performance without external congestion.
John Nahas, Chief Business Officer at Ava Labs, emphasized the importance of reliability in digital identity systems, stating, "The UAE is building digital services that people use every day, and Avalanche is designed for that kind of environment." This partnership signifies a commitment to secure and seamless digital services.
With the UAEPASS digital vault now on a dedicated blockchain, the TDRA will oversee the ecosystem, maintaining control over access and management. Saeed Belhoul, Dgov Operations Director at TDRA, remarked, "A government cannot outsource accountability for a system 12.5 million people depend on," highlighting the critical nature of this upgrade.
This initiative mirrors similar efforts in other regions, such as the California DMV's digitization of 42 million car titles on Avalanche, showcasing the potential of blockchain technology in enhancing governmental services.
