Terry Crews Launches its Social Currency “$POWER”
The most prominent Brooklyn 99 star- Terry Crews, is launching his social currency, “$POWER”, through the social crypto platform “Roll”.
According to TechCrunch, Crew’s ultimate goal with his $POWER social currency is to empower artists. His imaginative and persistent vision for the currency is for individuals to earn $POWER by selling their artwork, NFTs, physical goods, and experiences.
The details around the token are still vague. Still, according to the project’s official website, there might be a market cap of 10 million coins, of which 3.34 million are currently in circulation. The founders (Crews, Michael Peña and Dakota Xentaras) “will pool the currency onto some mainstream exchanges (Uniswap) to determine its initial market offering and reward early $POWER members and adopters.”
The platform Crews is utilizing to launch his social currency, Roll, raised $2.7 million in the funding of late 2020, and with around 300 creators who have already surpassed a $1.5 billion market cap.
Roll is powered by the Ethereum network and allows individuals to create their own ERC-20 tokens and help creators get closer to fans and consumers. The platform currently has 44 social currencies, with the most expensive one sitting at $77.62 — rising 87% in the last 24 hours. Referred to as “Friends with benefits,” it has no description and is unclear what this is used for.
At present, $POWER tokens have been distributed to approximately 100 people, and Crews is engaging with the currency’s community through Discord. The actor hopes to eventually add interest-free microloans to artists as another feature of the $POWER token. “That’s our long-term plan, to become this thing that this community can live and exist in,” Crews said.
The concept of actors, musicians, and influencers getting closer to their fans by decentralizing their content is gaining traction in the crypto industry.
World-famous rapper Akon who is creating a currency for a technology city in Kenya also got on board with Roll. To provide support to African influencers that create their own currencies on Roll. In turn, creators can choose to support Akon’s various business ventures.
Elsewhere in the industry, a social token incubator - Seed Club, is trying to make the social currency industry successful. Last year in October, Seed Club held a hackathon to engage the Ethereum community in the growing social token industry. The hackathon itself gave up $10,000 in awards.
