Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Achieves Milestone on Testnets, Aiming for 100ms Finality
Solana has marked a significant milestone with the activation of its Alpenglow upgrade on both testnet and devnet, aiming to revolutionize transaction finality.
Activated on September 24 and 25, respectively, Alpenglow replaces the previous TowerBFT consensus mechanism with Votor, targeting a dramatic reduction in finality time from 12.8 seconds to just 100-150 milliseconds.
Co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko expressed excitement about the upgrade, stating, "You are not ready for this," though the true test will come when these speeds are validated under full mainnet conditions.
The transition involved a 17-minute countdown, culminating in the retirement of TowerBFT and the introduction of Votor for finalization duties. This change has been in preparation since May, with community testing and governance approval received in September 2025.
While the upgrade promises enhanced efficiency, challenges remain for competing validator clients like Firedancer and Frankendancer, which have yet to implement Votor support.
As Solana continues to push the boundaries of blockchain technology, the implications for exchanges and infrastructure providers are significant, as they will need to adapt to the new speed of transaction finality.
