SEC Chair Paul Atkins Promises New Crypto Regulations to Retain Digital Markets in the U.S.
In a recent statement, SEC Chair Paul Atkins announced the introduction of new regulatory measures designed to keep U.S. digital asset markets competitive and onshore. This initiative follows the Senate's failure to pass the CLARITY Act, which aimed to provide a clearer framework for cryptocurrency regulations.
Atkins emphasized the importance of modernizing custody rules for crypto assets, which have remained unchanged since 1940. He noted that existing regulations are ill-suited for today’s digital landscape, which necessitates a comprehensive approach to crypto regulation.
Since taking office, Atkins has shifted the SEC's strategy from a strict enforcement model to a more supportive regulatory environment for the crypto industry. This includes the introduction of the Regulation Crypto Assets and the Innovation Exemption, which allows for a five-year sandbox for trading national stocks on decentralized exchanges.
Despite facing criticism regarding the SEC's authority in this domain, Atkins remains committed to enhancing pro-crypto regulations. He believes that blockchain technology can significantly modernize the financial system and that U.S. markets should not be forced offshore.
Looking ahead, Atkins hinted at more regulatory proposals in the pipeline, reinforcing his vision of establishing the United States as a global leader in the cryptocurrency space.
