OCC Unveils Investigation into Debanking Practices of America's Major Banks

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has launched a significant investigation into the debanking practices of America's nine largest national banks, uncovering troubling policies that may restrict financial services based on political beliefs and lawful business activities.

In a detailed report, the OCC analyzed nearly 100,000 complaints and over 420,000 pages of documents, revealing that banks like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Citibank have maintained policies that could lead to the denial of banking services to customers associated with certain political or religious affiliations.

One notable example highlighted in the investigation involved JPMorgan's payment subsidiary, Wepay, which closed the account of a seller of Trump merchandise, citing violations of its terms of service. This incident raises questions about the criteria used by banks to assess customer risk and the potential for discrimination.

Additionally, the OCC found that banks imposed industry-specific restrictions affecting sectors such as firearms, energy, and digital assets. The report emphasized that these policies had real-world consequences, often disadvantaging smaller businesses while allowing exceptions for larger, wealthier clients.

Comptroller Jonathan V. Gould expressed concern over the findings, stating that the evidence indicates a pattern of discrimination against lawful businesses. He warned that recent voluntary changes by banks may not be sufficient to address these issues and called for more stringent reforms to ensure fair access to financial services.

The investigation's revelations have sparked a broader conversation about the implications of debanking practices and the need for transparency and accountability in the banking sector.
