JPYC Stablecoin Launches on Upbit, Surges Past 3 Yen Amid Retail Demand
Japan's inaugural licensed yen stablecoin, JPYC, made its debut on South Korea's leading crypto exchange, Upbit, on September 17, 2026. The launch triggered a remarkable trading frenzy, with JPYC's price soaring to over 3 yen shortly after it became available.
Initially pegged at 1 yen, JPYC quickly attracted significant attention from Korean traders, who capitalized on the price discrepancy. The trading pair JPYC/KRW emerged as one of Upbit's most active markets, reflecting the intense retail demand.
On its first day, JPYC minted approximately ¥1.69 billion, as traders rushed to exploit the gap from its intended peg. Within just 48 hours, the circulating supply surged from ¥1.9 billion to over ¥4.2 billion, effectively stabilizing the price as arbitrage opportunities were realized.
JPYC's launch was notable not only for its price volatility but also for demonstrating the dynamics of supply and demand in the stablecoin market. The asset, which is backed by government bonds and bank deposits, is designed to maintain a 1:1 peg with the Japanese yen.
Despite the initial price surge, JPYC remained redeemable for 1 yen through JPYC Inc., showcasing the effectiveness of its underlying mechanics. The episode highlighted the potential for retail trading to influence stablecoin pricing significantly, particularly in markets with limited supply.
