Isabel Schnabel Advocates for Onchain Central Bank Money at Jackson Hole Symposium
At the recent Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, Isabel Schnabel, a member of the European Central Bank's Executive Board, made a compelling case for the necessity of central bank money to transition onto blockchain technology.
Schnabel highlighted that stablecoins fall short in providing liquidity during financial crises, a role that only central banks can fulfill effectively. She emphasized that for tokenization to enhance financial transactions, the safest assets—namely central bank money—must be integrated into the same digital framework.
The ECB's upcoming Project Pontes, set to launch in September 2026, aims to synchronize existing TARGET Services with distributed ledger technology (DLT) platforms. This initiative is designed to improve the efficiency and safety of euro transactions.
Looking ahead, Project Appia will lay out a comprehensive blueprint for a fully tokenized market in Europe by 2028, addressing the legal and technical standards needed for such a transformation.
While these developments may not directly influence Bitcoin's price, they signal a significant shift in how central banks view the integration of blockchain technology, potentially legitimizing the infrastructure that underpins the crypto market.
