Google Removes Chrome Extensions Mimicking Popular Crypto Wallets
Google has removed another batch of Chrome extensions that copied the identity of popular crypto wallets like Ledger and MetaMask.
As per the Naked Security which is a cybersecurity firm managed by Sophos reveals that Google has deleted 22 malicious Google Chrome extensions that imitated wallets such as Jaxx, Ledger, and Metamask. These extensions aim to steal the users’ credentials needed to access their real wallets.
Google is removing such dangerous extensions but these fake extensions appear as quickly as they are deleted.
In the previous month, Google took down 49 similar extensions after they were highlighted in a blog post. These fake extensions claimed to be affiliated with popular wallets and also mimic user experiences design as similar to the real ones. The report states that most of the extensions were removed within 24 hours as reported.
Google Chrome extensions have lots of cybercriminals waiting to fool the users. Google administrators in April modified the rules for the publication of extensions on their store so that it would become more difficult for scammers to spread malicious code.
Back in February, the fake extension impersonating a popular crypto wallet stole more than 200,000 XRP. Many exchanges that share cryptocurrency trading prices live are also being warned of this malicious activity.
