FBI Leads Inquiry Over Twitter Hacking And Crypto Scam
As per the sources, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is conducting an inquiry regarding the Twitter hack. Yesterday many lawmakers raised questions on the Twitter high-profile hack.
The law enforcement agency stated that crypto hackers emerged in committing cryptocurrency fraud after they gained control over Twitter accounts of celebrities and political figures such as Joe Biden, Kim Kardashian, Barack Obama, and Elon Musk.
After the breach, there were many concerns such as whether hackers were able to see private messages sent by the account holders. The lawmakers were worried about the future hacks.
US Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat, said
"While this scheme appears financially motivated...imagine if these bad actors had a different intent to use powerful voices to spread disinformation to potentially interfere with our elections, disrupt the stock market, or upset our international relations."
Twitter revealed that bitcoin hackers targeted employees with access to its internal systems and "used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf".
The high-profile accounts that were hacked included rapper Kanye West, Amazon.com Inc founder Jeff Bezos, investor Warren Buffett, Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates, and the corporate accounts for Uber Technologies Inc and Apple Inc asking their followers to send BTC on given bitcoin addresses.
Twitter’s shares fell more than 1% after Twitter faced the hack. During the ongoing investigation, many verified accounts are asked to stop publishing messages.
The hacked accounts tweeted to send users bitcoin and their money would be doubled. As per the blockchain records the scammers received more than $100,000 worth of cryptocurrency.
