Concerns Rise Over Ledger Wallet Security After Hidden Implants Found in Europe
In a troubling development for cryptocurrency enthusiasts, reports have emerged indicating that tampered Ledger wallets are not solely an issue in Asia, but have also been discovered in Europe. A user recently unveiled a hidden hardware implant in a Ledger wallet purchased from Mediamarkt, a prominent European retailer.
This revelation comes on the heels of a significant $93.4 million exploit linked to Ledger wallets sold through CryptoBilis, an authorized reseller based in Asia. The investigation has now expanded, with evidence suggesting similar vulnerabilities in devices sold across various European countries.
The user, known as Johannes, reported that the implant found in his wallet appeared to be an earlier version, making it easier to detect. Fortunately, he noted that while his wallet was compromised, no funds were transferred to an unauthorized party.
Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles highlighted that the antenna in Johannes's wallet indicated it was an 'Eurasian version,' suggesting that different versions of the implant may exist based on regional mobile frequencies.
Ledger has acknowledged the presence of a hidden implant in at least one affected wallet but insists that the exploit is confined to devices sold through CryptoBilis. The company is currently reviewing its reseller controls to enhance security measures.
In light of these developments, Ledger is urging customers to thoroughly inspect their wallets, particularly those purchased from resellers, as previous software checks have failed to detect these implants. Users are encouraged to reach out to Ledger Support and report any suspicious findings to local authorities.
