CME Group To Launch Micro Bitcoin Futures in May

Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME)- the world’s largest derivatives exchange is all set to launch Micro Bitcoin Futures Contracts in May, enabling traders to speculate on fractional units of BTC. CME’s new product is yet to receive approval from U.S. regulators.

Micro Bitcoin futures will be one-tenth the size of one bitcoin. For perspective, the standard CME futures contract is sized at 5 BTC (equivalent to $295,000). In contrast, the new Micro Futures Contract will be worth 0.1 BTC — or $5,900.

The smaller-sized contracts will provide institutional investors and small individual traders with one more tool to hedge their bitcoin price risk. They will be cash-settled against the CME reference rate, including data from major crypto exchanges like Coinbase, Gemini, Kraken, itBit, and Bitstamp. The new offering will be accompanied by all the features and advantages of the exchange’s normal Bitcoin Futures launched in December 2017.

“Since the launch of our Bitcoin futures contract in 2017, we have seen steady, ongoing growth of liquidity and market participation in our crypto derivatives, especially among institutional traders,” said Tim McCourt, CME Group Global Head of Equity Index and Alternative Investment Products. “The introduction of Micro Bitcoin futures responds directly to demand for smaller-sized contracts from a broad array of clients and will offer even more choice and precision in how participants can trade regulated Bitcoin futures in a transparent and efficient manner at CME Group.

Micro Bitcoin futures will join CME Group’s growing suite of cryptocurrency derivatives, including Bitcoin futures and options and recently launched Ether futures. From 2021 to date, over 13,800 CME Bitcoin futures contracts have traded on average each day. CME Ether futures have also seen over 767 contracts traded on average each day since its launch on February 8.

CME Group hit the headlines after PayPal’s announcement allowing U.S. customers to pay for goods and services with cryptocurrency. Additionally, Visa revealed that it is all set to launch a payment functionality using USDC stablecoin on the ethereum blockchain. Such bullish developments around the flagship cryptocurrency have stirred the bulls, sparking a rally in recent days.

Bitcoin is trading just above $58,000 at press time, with 1.95% gains over the past 24 hours.
