CFTC Unveils New Crypto Regulations, Urging Industry to 'Build Here' in the U.S.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has initiated a significant regulatory framework for the U.S. crypto market, inviting public feedback for the next 60 days on proposed rules for retail crypto commodity transactions.
During a recent symposium at Fordham University, CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig emphasized the importance of building within U.S. regulations, stating, "Build here" as a call to action for crypto entrepreneurs. This initiative aims to enhance consumer protections and prevent incidents similar to the FTX collapse.
The CFTC's Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) seeks to establish a new category specifically for crypto assets, which would integrate these transactions into a national regulatory framework. This move is designed to provide clarity and certainty for both consumers and businesses.
Chairman Selig articulated the need for proactive measures to combat fraud in the crypto space, asserting that the CFTC's goal is to prevent issues before they arise rather than merely responding to them after the fact. He highlighted the historical evolution of crypto, from Bitcoin's inception to the rise of decentralized networks and the challenges posed by centralized exchanges.
As the CFTC gathers industry insights and public comments, the future of U.S. crypto regulations is being shaped. The commission aims to create a transparent and trustworthy environment for crypto transactions, encouraging firms to adhere to American standards.
