Blockstream Clarifies Independence Amid $6.7M Lawsuit from River Financial

The lawsuit, filed on September 11, 2026, pertains to a canceled contract and has raised questions about brand licensing in the crypto space.
Blockstream Corp emphasized that since mid-2024, its U.S. and Canadian operations have not been under its ownership or management. The services retained the Blockstream name under a licensing agreement, which has caused some confusion in the industry.
River Financial's lawsuit alleges a breach of a termination agreement, seeking $3.55 million in prepaid refunds and a $3.15 million early-termination payment. Initial reports inaccurately suggested that Blockstream Corp was the defendant, leading to widespread misunderstanding.
In a statement released on September 26, Blockstream Corp clarified that the mining operations had been spun out as part of Blockstream Mining, which became an independent entity in April 2025. The company faced criticism for its brand licensing practices, with some community members expressing concern over potential user trust issues.
