Block Integrates Bitcoin Lightning Network into x402 Payment Standard for AI Transactions
In a groundbreaking move, Block, the payments company founded by Jack Dorsey, has integrated the Bitcoin Lightning Network into the x402 payment standard. This integration, announced on September 24, aims to facilitate seamless transactions for AI agents that require rapid and low-cost payments.
The x402 standard, which was originally designed to utilize the long-ignored HTTP status code 402, allows automated systems to make payments without human intervention. This development is particularly significant as AI applications increasingly need to purchase data and services at scale.
Previously, the x402 protocol was heavily reliant on Circle’s USDC stablecoin, which accounted for a staggering 99.3% of its transaction volume. The integration of the Lightning Network introduces a new layer of flexibility, enabling the use of Bitcoin for microtransactions that can occur in fractions of a penny.
Steve Lee, head of Spiral, Block’s open-source Bitcoin research unit, emphasized the importance of this integration, stating that it positions Bitcoin as a viable currency for everyday transactions. The Lightning Network is designed for instant, low-cost payments, making it ideal for the burgeoning machine economy.
With the x402 protocol handling over 75 million transactions in the last month alone, the potential for Bitcoin to support billions of small payments is immense. However, the success of this integration will depend on the ability of developers to utilize it effectively and ensure that the underlying infrastructure can handle the anticipated traffic.
