Beware! FBI Warns Crypto Holders To Stay Away From COVID19 Scammers
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), there could be a rise of crypto scams related to the coronavirus outbreak.
In a media release by the FBI on 13th April, they warned about the increase of “cryptocurrency-related fraud schemes” as more people are getting involved in the crypto world. Scammers could target the elderly first but the FBI reported that all age group of people could be the victim of such crypto scams.
FBI stated:
“There are not only numerous virtual asset service providers online but also thousands of cryptocurrency kiosks located throughout the world which are exploited by criminals to facilitate their schemes. Many traditional financial crimes and money laundering schemes are now orchestrated via cryptocurrencies.”
In simple words, the FBI warned citizens of America to watch for scams related to work from home, blackmail attempts, fake COVID-19 treatments or preventative measures, and scams related to traditional investment.
One of the shocking scams that the FBI reveals was of receiving an email or letter threatening to infect with coronavirus to the victim or their family if they didn’t pay to a provided Bitcoin wallet address.
Previously, there were attempts of stealing cryptocurrency by misdirecting people for sending donations for COVID-19 pandemic to the World Health Organization (WHO).
FBI mentions that if anyone suspects they are being targeted by a scammer should see that charities are legitimate and accept crypto for donations. Although, the organization is legitimate, “pressure to use a virtual currency should be considered a significant red flag.”
