BetMGM's Adam Greenblatt Critiques CFTC's Casino Regulation as Superficial, Predicts State Wins
In a recent earnings call, BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt expressed skepticism about the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's (CFTC) latest regulatory moves concerning casino-style products. He characterized these efforts as 'cosmetics in pursuit of survival,' suggesting they do little to mitigate the inherent risks associated with prediction markets.
Greenblatt's comments come in light of the CFTC's interim final rule, which aims to exclude casino-style gambling products from its jurisdiction. He argued that this does not eliminate the risks involved but merely postpones them.
Looking ahead, Greenblatt anticipates that the Supreme Court will favor states and tribes in ongoing legal battles, particularly regarding the legality of prediction markets. He noted that previous rulings have generally sided with state interests, indicating a potential shift in the legal landscape.
As the CFTC's new rules await publication in the Federal Register, Greenblatt warned that any regulations established now could easily be reversed in the future. He emphasized that the survival of prediction markets could lead to the reemergence of casino-like products under different guises.
BetMGM's third-quarter financial results showed a net revenue increase of 7% year-over-year, totaling $710 million, while adjusted EBITDA surged by 112%. However, the company is strategically reducing investments in lower-return markets, focusing instead on the more lucrative iGaming sector.
As the competitive environment intensifies, particularly due to unregulated operators, Greenblatt's insights highlight the ongoing challenges and uncertainties facing the intersection of sports betting and regulatory frameworks.
