Argentinian Telecom Giant Faced Cyber Attack And Hackers Demand $7.5M In Monero
The biggest telecommunications company in Argentina, Telecom S.A. has been the victim of a ransomware attack where hackers demanded $7.5M in privacy coin Monero (XMR). Hackers have given the time limit of Tuesday, July 21. If a company fails to make payment till the deadline then the amount will rise to USD 15 million (XMR 216,189).
Along with demand to pay the ransom in XMR, hackers have also left a message with links where to buy this privacy coin.
The attack has not caused any harm to users or internet and telephone services provided by Telecom Argentina but the company has lost access to Office365 and OneDrive files. The affected internal systems are corporate VPN, Citrix, Siebel, Genesys, the Customer and Field Service virtual machines, and internal users’ Pcs.
The source of the attack has come from an attachment in an email, according to speculations on social media.
The company is looking for the solution and has asked its employees to avoid certain behaviors like using the corporate network, open suspicious files or emails from unknown recipients, and turning off computers until the situation is normalized.
However, there is no official statement issued by Telecom Argentina S.A.
The initial attack was started as early as Wednesday when employees began noticing trouble accessing the company’s VPN and other databases.
