How will Bitcoin Taproot Upgrade Benefit Users?
Over the years, Bitcoin has been the ruling King as it bears a significant force that drives the performance of the Crypto space. Despite the issues that have popped up, like the Mt. Gox hack or the infamous Bitcoin hard forks, the Crypto community has always stood besides Bitcoin. As it is the leading digital asset, Bitcoin requires timely modifications in order to grow the industry. In a bid to boost the performance and potentials of Bitcoin, certain upgrades have been initiated. One such upgrade is the “Bitcoin Taproot”.
What is Bitcoin Taproot?
The Taproot update has been accepted by Crypto miners all across the world, four years after the ‘last civil-war upgrade.’ The update is expected to be completed in November 2021. The Bitcoin Taproot upgrade improves transaction efficiency and ensures complete privacy. Alongside, the Bitcoin Blockchain will also be able to unlock the functionality of smart contracts. Smart contracts would function more efficiently and at a lower cost thanks to the Taproot update for Bitcoin. Until now, smart contracts were running only on the Ethereum network as it allows higher efficiency. Unlike Bitcoin’s most last upgrade in 2017 which was dubbed as “final civil war,” Taproot has almost universal support because the upgrades reflect incremental progress in the code.

Schnorr Signatures: Claus Schnorr, a well-known Cryptographer was the one who first introduced Schnorr Signatures. The initiative’s main goal was to combine several signatures from a Bitcoin transaction into a signal signature. Schnorr Signatures is a Bitcoin update that permits several scripts on the network to be used in a single transaction. Surprisingly, Schnorr Signatures functionality does not stop there; it also merges the involved scripts into one. Furthermore, it allows Bitcoin users to sign only once, even if they utilize multiple diverse wallets.
MAST Solutions: The idea of a Merkelized Abstract Syntax Tree is sometimes referred to as “Bitcoin MAST” before the initiation of the Bitcoin Taproot. MAST is a Bitcoin upgrade that kicked off the complete process of Bitcoin improvement proposals. This refers to the technique in which numerous scripts are linked together to conduct Bitcoin transactions. MAST offers enjoyable and advanced features to Bitcoin users; it is, however, prone to danger when complex expense conditions are adopted. Thus, puts the privacy of the involved transactions at stake.
According to Unocoin co-founder and CEO Sathvik Vishwanath, this upgrade has two sides. On one hand, it is expected to improve transaction's privacy and transparency, and on the other hand, it is for the first time smart contracts are being integrated into the Bitcoin Blockchain network. These attributes are already present in other coins, and because it has proven to be a successful experiment in other coins, it is now being copied in Bitcoin, the world’s most popular and frequently used Cryptocurrency.

Several changes have been made to existing Cryptocurrencies over time and thousands of newer Cryptocurrencies have entered the market. Despite being the foremost popular Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin received its last substantial upgrade four years ago. “Many referred to the previous update as a ‘civil war’ of sorts since it produced a significant ideological rift,” said Edul Patel, CEO and Co-founder, of Mudrex, an algo-based Crypto trading platform.

How does it work?
Every Bitcoin transaction requires certain requirements, such as multiple signatures, Timelocks, and the likes, which has tendencies to appear similar to single transactions. Taproot would hide all requirements including complicated and activated criteria required for a Bitcoin transaction leaving only the final activated condition. In other words, Taproot’s Bitcoin network functionality ensures that all transactions whether P2P or smart contract are indistinguishable.
Even though the Bitcoin Blockchain is public, Taproot tends to make Cryptocurrency private. In particular, it prevents outsiders from monitoring network transactions. It solely discloses information about the sender and the final recipient. Taproot is compatible with other related improvements such as Schnorr Signatures and MAST, which work together to improve efficiency.
Who proposed it and How will it Benefit?
George Maxwell, a Bitcoin core contributor, introduced Taproot in 2018. His goal was to create a method that might hide the visuality of the Bitcoin script as well as the combination of several scripts. As we know, Taproot will significantly increase Bitcoin’s privacy. Taproot, when used in combination with Schnorr Signatures may improve transaction efficiency. Other potential benefits in addition to increased privacy include:
- The amount of data that needs to be exchanged and kept on the Blockchain is reduced.
- Increasing the number of transactions per block (higher TPS rate).
- Transaction fees is reduced.
Apart from this, Signatures will no longer be malleable, which is a recognized security problem in the Bitcoin network. In other words, a Signatures' malleability refers to the technological ability to change a transaction’s signature before it is confirmed. Thus, by doing this, the attack would make it appear as if the transaction never happened. This exposes Bitcoin to the infamous double-spending problem, which might jeopardize the distributed ledger’s integrity.
Privacy benefits:
Taproot’s privacy ramifications are likely the most significant aspect of the upgrade. Multisignature contracts are no longer distinguishable from single signature contracts thanks to the addition of Schnorr Signatures and key aggregation, ensuring anonymity to all Taproot users. Taproot’s integration with MAST also provides major privacy benefits. Taproot, as previously mentioned, allows Bitcoin to be locked to many scripts at the same time. However, when spending Bitcoin from a Taproot output, the spender does not have to publish every alternative script that could have unlocked the Bitcoin, only the one they used
Taproot customers will almost certainly pick the pay-to-public-key option, which allows them to keep any backup choices they may have planned private.
Space savings:
Most Taproot (P2TR) outputs take up less Blockchain space than standard P2PKH outputs but are slightly bigger than P2WPKH outputs. This is due to the fact that P2TR outputs directly lock Bitcoin to a public key rather than the hash of the public key. This makes sending to Taproot outputs a bit expensive, because public keys consume more space than public key hashes.
On the other hand, spending Taproot outputs are far less expensive because the public key is contained in the scriptPubKey and thus does not need to be included in the Script Witness. Taproot also proposed the encoding strategy for Schnorr public keys and Signatures, shortening them compared to their ECDSA equivalents and saving fees.
Security upgrade:
Schnorr Signatures are considered more secure than ECDSA Signatures on a technical, theoretical level because Schnorr Signatures are provably secure with fewer assumptions. Both ECDSA and Schnorr, like all elliptic curve Cryptography systems, rely on the premise that the Discrete Logarithm Problem is difficult. ECDSA, on the other hand, makes additional assumptions in order to ensure its security. Despite this, no instance of ECDSA being systematically compromised has been reported during Bitcoin’s history. Schnorr Signatures also erase any signature malleability that ECDSA Signatures may have had. While the SegWit upgrade eliminated transaction malleability, ECDSA’s Signature malleability remained as a feature.

When will it come into effect?
According to the reports, the Taproot upgrade will not be released until November 2021. To lessen the chances of something going wrong, developers will need additional time to test the update ahead of time. Before being released, update processes are thoroughly tested and retested to ensure that there are no bugs. In 2013, a bug in a software upgrade nearly halved the value of Bitcoin.

Due to its reputation as the first Blockchain, Bitcoin continues to be the dominant force in the Cryptocurrency sector. However, an enhancement to Bitcoin such as Taproot that improves usability and efficiency assures that it remains a viable development platform. Furthermore, Bitcoin’s foresight including features that make updates easy ensures that it will remain competitive for many years to come. Taproot’s etymology suggests that it is not a stand-alone update, but rather the foundation for future upgrades that will build on its new success.
