Walmart Apollo LLC filed an application on Jan 29 where it stated that they want to patent a method for creating a coin that runs and records transactions on a blockchain, a digital ledger similar to the one powering Bitcoin. Walmart applied to use digital coin linked with traditional fiat currency and that will lead to cheaper and faster transactions as well as loyalty features. This filing was published on August 1 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. Even if this application gets approved, Walmart doesn't seem to launch a coin similar to Facebook’s Libra. A person from Walmart, Kory Lundberg said; “we don’t have any plans for this patent at this time.”
