Worldcoin, the biometric proof-of-personhood protocol, has agreed to temporarily halt its operations in Spain. The Spanish privacy watchdog AEPD announced the company will cease data collection for a year or until Bavaria’s privacy regulator completes its investigation into Worldcoin. This decision follows increasing opposition from Spanish privacy institutions and a prior three-month suspension. The AEPD cited concerns about data handling, including potential inclusion of minors and users' inability to withdraw their information. Worldcoin appealed, arguing the AEPD lacked jurisdiction per GDPR, which assigns oversight to the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision (BayLDA).
