Winklevoss Asset Services has officially filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch a spot Zcash ETF, designated under the ticker symbol WINK on Nasdaq. This strategic move aims to provide investors with direct exposure to Zcash (ZEC), moving beyond derivative products.
The proposed Zcash ETF represents a significant challenge to Grayscale’s existing Zcash offerings, as the Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler, expand their institutional crypto strategy to include privacy coins. This initiative follows Grayscale’s recent launch of its own Zcash product.
According to the filing, the ETF is designed to offer public investors direct price exposure to Zcash, minus operational trust expenses. Unlike synthetic products, this fund will directly hold ZEC, enhancing its appeal to institutional investors.
Winklevoss Capital has expressed a nonbinding interest in acquiring up to $100 million in shares from authorized participants or on secondary markets once the ETF is launched. The trust will utilize a cash-based creation and redemption model, allowing authorized participants to subscribe for shares by depositing cash, which will then be used to purchase ZEC.
Additionally, Winklevoss Asset Services has partnered with Cypherpunk Technologies, a firm that manages approximately $440 million in ZEC, to provide technical guidance and facilitate community engagement regarding protocol developments.
The registration statement is subject to SEC review and must gain market effectiveness before trading can commence on Nasdaq. This filing marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing competition for institutional dominance in the privacy coin sector.
