The U.S. Department of Justice, FBI, and Secret Service have seized approximately $225.3 million in cryptocurrency—the largest-ever recovery from a single crypto scam—stemming from a so-called “pig butchering” investment fraud linked to Southeast Asian human trafficking and scam networks. Scammers foster fake relationships to lure over 400 victims into supposedly legitimate crypto investments, only to vanish with their funds. The illicit proceeds were channeled through Tether and OKX wallets and flagged by the crypto firms in 2023. Authorities intend to return the recovered funds to victims; unclaimed sums may bolster a U.S. crypto reserve.
