A U.S. tourist in Scottsdale, Arizona, fell victim to a sophisticated scam where a man impersonated an Uber driver and stole $223,000 in cryptocurrency. The suspect, Nuruhussein Hussein, allegedly approached victims outside the W Hotel, calling them by name to gain trust. Once inside his vehicle, he requested to use their phones under the pretense of a malfunctioning device or to assist with the Uber app. Hussein then accessed their Coinbase accounts and transferred funds to cold storage wallets. When one victim grew suspicious, Hussein reportedly issued threats, causing the victim to fear he was armed. He was arrested on December 11, 2024, and faces charges of theft, fraud, and money laundering. Authorities have imposed a $200,000 cash bond, electronic monitoring, and restrictions on internet use and international travel, citing concerns about evidence destruction and flight risk to Ethiopia, where Hussein frequently travels.
