The Solar Techno Alliance (STA) crypto scam was a Ponzi scheme that duped over 2 lakh investors in India, including many in Odisha. The scheme promised investors daily returns of 3-5% on their deposits, which had a 20-month lock-in period. However, the scheme was not registered in India or abroad, and the STA token had no real value. The Odisha Economic Offences Wing (EOW) arrested the India head of STA, Gurtej Singh Sidhu, and the CEO of STA, David Gez, in August 2023. The EOW found that STA had collected over ₹1,000 crore from investors in the two years of its operation. The STA scam is a reminder of the risks associated with investing in cryptocurrencies, especially those promoted through Ponzi schemes. Investors should always do their research before investing in any cryptocurrency, and they should be wary of any investment that promises high returns with low risk.
