Solana is gearing up for its highly anticipated Alpenglow upgrade, scheduled to go live on October 21, 2026. This significant enhancement promises to reduce transaction finality from 12.8 seconds to an impressive 150 milliseconds, marking a 99% improvement.
The upgrade will introduce a new consensus mechanism called Votor, which replaces the existing on-chain voting system. This change allows validators to communicate directly and reach consensus more efficiently, streamlining the process of confirming transactions.
Despite the excitement surrounding the Alpenglow upgrade, Solana's native token, SOL, is currently trading at around $106, reflecting a 10% decline over the past two weeks and a staggering 64% drop from its all-time high of $293 recorded in January 2025.
As part of the transition, Solana will maintain its current system for approximately 18 minutes during the upgrade, allowing validators to prepare for the switch to Votor once at least 82% of staked SOL is reached. The Alpenglow upgrade is a crucial step in Solana's evolution, with the second component, Rotor, expected to enhance block distribution among validators in the future.
