The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) will begin live trials of a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) in 2024. The trials will focus on using the CBDC for interbank settlement and cross-border payments. The MAS is also exploring the use of the CBDC for other purposes, such as tokenized assets and retail payments. The MAS believes that a CBDC could offer a number of benefits to the Singaporean financial system, including faster and more efficient payments, reduced costs, and increased financial stability. The trials are an important step in determining whether a CBDC is feasible and beneficial for Singapore.
