Two Salmon Arm residents fell prey to fraud earlier this month, with one woman losing $80,000 in an online crypto scam. On Dec. 14, the woman reported that she had clicked on a cryptocurrency investment ad on Google that required her name, email address and phone number, and was then contacted by someone claiming to be a “senior crypto-investing agent.” Through a conversation on WhatsApp, the person then groomed the woman into transferring $80,000 to their “website.” “The money appeared to be transferred to a cryptocurrency exchange, converted into Bitcoin, and then transferred to the fraudster,” Const. Andrew Hodges said in a Dec. 27 media release.
