In a significant move towards the adoption of its central bank digital currency (CBDC), the Russian Ministry of Finance has started paying state employees in digital rubles. This initiative, which began on October 1, follows the digital ruble's official launch on September 1.
Employees can now receive their salaries through accounts established on the Bank of Russia's platform, marking a pivotal step in integrating the digital currency into everyday financial transactions.
According to the ministry, the option to receive wages in digital rubles is available to all Russian citizens, provided they request it. This development is part of broader efforts to incorporate the digital ruble into government financial processes.
Additionally, Anatoly Aksakov, head of the State Duma Committee on the Financial Market, has indicated that plans are underway to enable ATM withdrawals for digital rubles next year. This would facilitate direct cash access for users, further bridging the gap between traditional fiat and digital currencies.
Aksakov stated, "Technologically, yes, it is possible and feasible. In principle, this is not a difficult task, I think it is possible next year." This advancement aims to enhance user experience and promote the digital ruble's adoption among the populace.
As the Bank of Russia continues to refine the digital ruble platform, officials emphasize the importance of making it user-friendly to encourage widespread acceptance.
