The newly launched stablecoin, Open USD (OUSD), has made a significant entrance into the market with over $1 billion in liquidity. This initiative is backed by a consortium of prominent companies including Coinbase, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe, and Visa.
OUSD introduces a unique economic model where businesses can mint and redeem tokens at par without incurring fees or facing volume limits. This innovative approach allows partner companies to earn the majority of the income generated from the stablecoin's reserves.
Launched on September 30, OUSD is pegged to the U.S. dollar and operates natively across multiple blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Base, Solana, and Tempo. This multi-chain strategy eliminates the need for bridged copies, ensuring each network has its own native version of the token.
With an initial liquidity of over $400 million reported on its first day, OUSD aims to challenge established stablecoins like USDT and USDC by offering a more attractive revenue-sharing model for its partners. The project has garnered interest from over 200 companies, indicating a strong commitment to its success.
Despite the robust backing and innovative structure, OUSD faces the challenge of achieving widespread adoption. The success of this stablecoin will depend on its ability to convert initial investments into active circulation within the market.
