Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, 35, from Springfield, Virginia, was sentenced to over 30 years in federal prison for funding ISIS using cryptocurrency. From 2019 to 2022, Chhipa raised over $185,000 through social media campaigns and converted the funds to crypto, which he funneled to ISIS operatives via Turkey. The money supported terrorist activities, including prison breaks and aiding fighters. He was convicted on five terrorism-related charges, including conspiracy and material support to a foreign terrorist organization. The case highlights the increasing threat of crypto-enabled terrorism financing and underscores the urgent need for digital financial monitoring and global counter-terrorism coordination mechanisms.
