Kraken-backed startup Rails has launched a hybrid cryptocurrency exchange after raising $14 million from investors including Kraken Ventures, Slow Ventures, and CMCC Global. Rails aims to blend the speed of centralized exchanges with the security and transparency of decentralized systems. It uses a centralized matching engine for fast trades while settling transactions on-chain using self-custody and zero-knowledge proofs. Users retain control of assets while benefiting from high-speed execution. The funds, raised through a token sale in April 2025, will support platform development. Rails reflects a growing industry trend toward hybrid models that prioritize both performance and user asset ownership.
