Jack Dorsey, Twitter co-founder and Block CEO, has donated $1 million to support a guaranteed basic income (GBI) pilot program in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. The program will provide 540 eligible residents with $500 per month for 18 months. GBI is a policy proposal that would provide all citizens with a regular, unconditional sum of money, regardless of their income or employment status. Proponents of GBI argue that it would reduce poverty, improve health and well-being, and boost the economy. The St. Louis GBI pilot program is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. It is being funded by a combination of public and private funds, including Dorsey's donation.
