Aleksei Andriunin, the 26-year-old founder and CEO of cryptocurrency market-making firm Gotbit, has been extradited from Portugal to the United States to face charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit market manipulation. Arrested in Portugal on October 8, 2024, Andriunin was indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston on October 31, 2024. The indictment also names Gotbit and its directors, Fedor Kedrov and Qawi Jalili. Between 2018 and 2024, Gotbit allegedly provided market manipulation services, including wash trading, to artificially inflate trading volumes for client cryptocurrency companies, earning tens of millions of dollars in proceeds. If convicted, Andriunin faces up to 20 years in prison for wire fraud and an additional five years for conspiracy.
