Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has expressed strong concerns over Sam Altman’s Worldcoin project, now rebranded as “World.” He warned that the system’s reliance on iris-scanning Orbs risks compromising privacy, enforcing centralized control, and excluding users without access to the hardware. Buterin also questioned the security of proprietary devices and the danger of a single ID model undermining online anonymity. He advocates for a pluralistic digital identity framework with multiple providers to ensure decentralization and inclusivity. While Worldcoin promotes proof-of-personhood using zero-knowledge proofs, Buterin argues its current approach could lead to surveillance risks and technological monopolies in digital identity.
