According to a company official, Athena Bitcoin aims to build 1500 Bitcoin ATMs in El Salvador. The ATMs will cost more than $1 million to instal, according to the Chicago-based company. It now has only two of these ATMs in the country, one of which is located at "Bitcoin Beach." The World Bank has declined to help the country shift to a crypto-based economy, citing "environmental and transparency flaws" with the digital currency.
