Two Chinese nationals, Yicheng Zhang and Zongliang Li, pleaded guilty to laundering over $73 million in proceeds from a cryptocurrency investment scam that defrauded American victims of $37 million. Operating from 2019 to 2023, the scam was part of a broader "pig butchering" scheme where victims were manipulated into investing in fake crypto platforms. The defendants used shell companies, U.S. bank accounts, and false documentation to move funds through the financial system. Prosecutors described the operation as highly sophisticated. Both face significant prison time, and their cooperation may uncover more international fraud operations linked to similar crypto schemes.
