The British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) has ordered David Smillie, the founder of the defunct crypto trading platform ezBtc, to pay $18.4 million in penalties for his involvement in a significant fraud scheme. Between 2016 and 2019, ezBtc misled customers by claiming their crypto assets would be stored securely in cold wallets. Instead, a substantial portion—about $13 million—was diverted to gambling websites and Smillie’s personal accounts on other platforms. The company, which was dissolved in 2022, failed to participate in the hearing, and Smillie, though represented by a lawyer, was found responsible for the platform's misconduct.
