Iurii Gugnin, a Russian crypto founder in New York, has been arrested for a $530 million scheme to bust sanctions and export controls. He allegedly used his U.S. crypto companies, Evita Investments and Evita Pay, to launder Tether (USDT) through the U.S. financial system. Gugnin is accused of hiding funds from sanctioned Russian banks and facilitating payments for sensitive U.S. technology destined for Russia's state-owned nuclear firm, Rosatom, all while lying to banks and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. He faces numerous charges including wire and bank fraud.
