On May 17, 2025, Festo Ivaibi, founder of Uganda-based crypto education firm Mitroplus Labs, was abducted near his home in Kampala by armed men posing as military officers. Under duress, he was forced to transfer approximately $500,000 in cryptocurrency from multiple wallets to the attackers. The assailants also coerced the sale of Afro Token, a meme coin associated with Mitroplus Labs, leading to a 16.7% drop in its value. This incident highlights a troubling trend of crypto-related kidnappings in Uganda, with Mitroplus Labs reporting over 48 similar attacks, many of which remain unreported. Experts are urging enhanced coordination between physical security measures and digital asset protections to safeguard individuals in the crypto industry.
