Kraken has launched its own Wrapped Bitcoin token (kBTC), an ERC-20 token backed 1:1 by Bitcoin, on October 17, 2024. This new token is available on both the Ethereum and OP Mainnet (formerly Optimism), allowing Bitcoin to be used in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. Kraken emphasizes transparency, providing on-chain verifiability of the Bitcoin reserves backing kBTC. The reserves are held securely by Kraken Financial, and the custody address is publicly available. Additionally, the smart contract for kBTC has been audited by security firm Trail of Bits. While Kraken doesn't plan to introduce a spot market for kBTC initially, the token can be redeemed for the underlying Bitcoin.
