In a strategic move to bolster its market data capabilities, Coinmarketcap has acquired Coinglass, a prominent platform specializing in crypto derivatives analytics. This acquisition, announced on September 25, 2026, aims to integrate Coinglass's comprehensive data on open interest, funding rates, and options into Coinmarketcap's extensive user offerings.
Coinglass, which operates independently for the time being, serves over 5 million monthly users and provides insights across 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 instruments. The integration of Coinglass's data is expected to enhance Coinmarketcap's existing services, which already attract around 115 million users each month.
Coinmarketcap CEO Rush emphasized the importance of derivatives in understanding market risks, stating, "Derivatives are where most of the market’s risk is taken, and Coinglass is where most people go to see it." This acquisition positions Coinmarketcap to deliver a more comprehensive view of market dynamics.
Despite assurances from Coinglass that its operations will remain unchanged, the acquisition has sparked discussions about data concentration, particularly given Coinmarketcap's ownership by Binance since 2020. Concerns have been raised regarding the trustworthiness of data under a single corporate umbrella, with some traders questioning the implications for data integrity.
As Coinmarketcap integrates Coinglass's offerings, the crypto community will be watching closely to see how this affects the landscape of market data and the balance of power within the industry.
