The Central Bank of Qatar has completed the development of its infrastructure for a central bank digital currency (CBDC), with plans to begin testing in October 2024. This CBDC project aims to align with global developments in the field and will focus on facilitating large payments among national and international banks during the pilot phase. Qatar's CBDC is expected to enhance access to capital markets for banks in the country, improve domestic settlement processes, and increase the efficiency of securities transactions. The project reflects a growing trend of countries exploring the issuance of their own CBDCs.
