A 7 On Your Side investigation revealed how an 83-year-old California woman lost nearly $50,000 in a cryptocurrency scam involving Coinstar kiosks and Coinme accounts. The scammers manipulated her through a fake bank fraud alert, convincing her to withdraw cash and convert it into Bitcoin. This case highlights growing concerns about cryptocurrency fraud, particularly schemes known as "pig butchering," where victims are conned through elaborate setups. California officials and FinCEN are working to increase public awareness and improve protections against such scams.
